Shimane, a prefecture located in the northwest of Honshū, is known as the “Province of the Gods” and is rich in Shinto-based Japanese mythology and folklore. In Shimane, there are many landmarks and sites from Japanese mythology and folklore such as the “the Underworld” (Yomotsu Hirasaka), the “Birthplace of Sake”, and many others including Izumo Taisha where all deities in Japan gather once a year in Kami-ari-zuki.  Shimane is also famous where Kabuki creator came from as well as onsen (hot springs).

In this lecture, Shinto priest Izumi Hasegawa will show us Shimane’s charm and its relation to mythology and the Japanese traditions of Shinto.  She will also provide us with useful information for travel in Shimane.

Rev. Izumi Hasegawa was born and raised in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, Japan. Her family cares for the 800-year-old Shusse Inari Shrine located at 183 Tera-machi, Matsue, Shimane. After extensive studies, she received certification as a Shinto priest by the Association of Shinto Shrines in 1998. She has since officiated many ceremonies in Japan.
She opened an American branch shrine, Shusse Inari Shrine of America, in Los Angeles (ShusseInariShrine.org). In America she has now conducted Shinto memorial services for the victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as well as services for the great earthquake and tsunami that struck eastern Japan on March 11th, 2011. She also regularly conducts New Years celebrations and Hatsuuma Matsuri (spring festival).
