About Event:

Ms. Leslie Buck is the author of the New York Time’s reviewed Japanese garden memoir "Cutting Back-My Apprenticeship In The Gardens Of Kyoto" (Timber Press) about a California gardener who works with traditional garden craftsmen of Kyoto in private homes, monasteries and an emperor’s villa. Leslie will talk about her experience being employed by one of the most historic landscaping companies of Kyoto as a foreigner for three seasons and show various garden photos from her book. Q&A session follows the lecture.

 

   About Lecturer:

Leslie Buck
She holds a fine arts degree from the University of California-Berkeley, attended the School of Fine Arts in Bordeaux-France, and studied horticulture at Merritt College, where she met her mentor Dennis Makishima, a world-renowned pruning instructor and bonsai artist. She has managed an aesthetic pruning business in the San Francisco Bay Area for over two decades. She has worked, taught, and volunteered in hundreds of private and public landscapes, including Portland Japanese Garden, Hakone Japanese Garden, and Tassajara Zen Center.  (See lesliebuckauthor.com for NPR podcast and pruning video on Leslie’s adventures!)
