Japanese pop music (J-Pop) has been greatly widespread and continues to gain popularity throughout the world. Part of their popularity is due to the Japanese animation, manga and fashion cultures. However, J-Pop has various distinct characteristics and is meticulously constructed to stay in the listener's head. In this lecture, Dr. Jonathan “Capital” Patterson will explain J-Pop music theory and will expose their secrets. You will develop a deeper understanding of music between Japan and the West as well as appreciate J-Pop music. Come enjoy the world of J-Pop music.

Recently featured on the Japanese TV shows "Music Station" and "You Wa Nanishini Nippon He," Capital is an acoustic pop singer-songwriter solo recording and performing artist. He also co-leads the original Brazilian jazz group Bossa Zuzu, produced by multi-GRAMMY winning jazz legend Peter Erskine. Capital has been featured on over 25 recordings from Rock to Hip-Hop to Brazilian. A former Oregon state high school champion of Classical Guitar, Capital is known as both an electric and acoustic guitarist, with a wide palette of professional experience that also includes Electronica, Jazz, Afro-Beat and Latin American Folkloric music styles. He has toured extensively performing festivals and concert halls, live on TV and radio in the U.S., Canada, Japan and Brazil, from the Fuji Rock Festival to Good Day L.A..

In addition to performances on air as a guest artist on many TV shows and FM radio programs, Capital is an FM radio personality who hosted his own weekly radio show from 2006-2011 called Ii Za Eigo on JOLU 76.1 FM Fukui. Capital has a Doctorate of Musical Arts from USC's Thornton School of Music and a Master's degree in Ethnomusicology from UC Berkeley. He currently teaches at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music.
