Embroidery was initially introduced into Japan from China together with Buddhism.  It became open to the merchant class culture in the Edo period.  As the clothing arts flourished, advanced dyeing and weaving techniques were used to create kimonos and kimono sashes.  Today, a variety of materials are available, enabling various expressions depending on individual originality and ingenuity.
Shizuka Kusano, one of the most admired and recognized textile artists in Japan today, showcases contemporary art pieces based on 1500 year-old traditional embroideries inspired by Japanese poetry, literature and art.

About Artist

Shizuka Kusano is one of Japan’s most well-known kimono embroidery artists. Having studied French embroidery under TakikoMoriyama and Japanese embroidery under Masaaki Niwa, she now teaches her art at her studio and several other venues.
She regularly appears on television and in magazines and holds many exhibitions in different cities in Japan. Her first English publication is “The Fine Art of Kimono Embroidery”.
